Basics of Website Conversion
January 5th, 2008 · Filed Under: Internet Affiliate Marketing Website Conversion Tips
Do you know if your website is converting?
That is a question that we shouldn’t have to ask ourselves. It is something we should know. The problem here is that a lot of us think that getting this information is very hard.
It isn’t. There are a number of ways to find your website conversion rates, number of visitors, how long they stayed, the number of pages they viewed, how many return visitors you have, and much more.
I know the first thing you are asking yourself is how much will all this information cost me.
The answer is: Not one red cent.
That’s right. You can find out all that information by just putting 1 snip-it of script on the pages you want to track. The script goes in the body of the page as the last thing just before the </body> tag.
Where do you get the script?
That one is easy also. The biggest search engine on the internet will not only give you the script, they will also do all the tracking and record keeping for you.
Lets look at what you have to do.
-
You have to go to Google Analytics and setup your account.
-
Once your account is setup you click on the “Add Website Profile” link.
-
Next make sure the “Add a profile for new domain” is checked.
-
Enter the web address , country and time zone and click continue.
-
On the next page you have a choice of 2 different scripts, choose one.
-
High lite the script in the box and copy.
This next step is where it becomes a little more complicated because the script has to be pasted into the source code on your page just before the </body> end body tag.
We are going to look at the method of doing this from a hosting site that uses cPanel.
-
Log into the cPanel of your hosting site.
-
Click on “file manager” icon to open the site folders.
-
Click on the folder icon beside “public_html” “repeat the click on the folder if you are going to a sub-folder”.
-
Click on the file name “example-index.html” for the page you want to enter the code.
-
On the right upper corner of your screen you will see the file name with several actions you can take. Click on “Html Editor”
-
When the window opens you will see a preview of the page, under the preview click on “html code”.
-
This will change to the source code of your page. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. The next to last snip of text you see will be </body>
-
Go to the end of the line just above that and left click like you would in a text document to get the cursor flashing (at the very end of the text just after the > simbol) and then hit “enter” on your keyboard.
-
This will open a space between the last line of code and the </body> tag. Left click your mouse and select “paste”.
-
At the bottom of the preview pane click “Design”. In the top left corner of the display page you will see a floppy disk icon that you will recognize as the save button. Click it to save your changes.
You have just setup google analytics on that page. Now go through the process from bullet 4 down for each page you want to add to the analytics of the site.
Now when you log into your google analytic home page you will see the website listed under Website profiles. You can click on the “view reports” link and see your statistics laid out in several formats.
I personally like to look at the visitor overview chart and slide my cursor along the daily buttons to see the number of visitors. The important information though is the site usage which give # of visits, page views, pages viewed per visitor, bounce rate, average time on site, and new visits.
